Da Vinci's Workshop

The CD-ROM really brings the book to life, so that you become involved in an interactive game that lets you explore every corner of the whole workshop. Use the machines and create your own design!

Enter your name at the start of the game. The computer will remember it.

Listen to Leonardo’s life story told by a voice that will accompany you right through his history.

Find out how much you know about Leonardo, learn about his most important artworks and sculptures, see what he discovered as a scientist, mathematician and as a great inventor.

Let history’s greatest inventions take you back through time.

Enter Leonardo’s laboratory in Milan in the year 1500.

Begin your adventure inside the Sforza Castle in Milan. The architecture and rooms are virtual reconstructions based on real historical documents. Actually, the entire castle is very different from the one that exists today.

Use the simple automatic interface to move around inside the laboratory.

As you explore the rooms and different parts of the castle, you will discover many of Leonardo’s inventions, manuscripts and models that you can examine in detail. You may even manipulate the models!

The aim is to discover the seven key mechanisms that make all Leonardo’s machines work. See if you can find out where they are hidden. Don’t forget what you are looking for!

Explore the whole laboratory and identify the machines, systems, gears and manuscripts, by clicking them with the mouse.

When you find the 7 key mechanisms, a window will open with an explanation of how they work.

For example, this is the inclined plane.

This, on the other hand, is a simple machine based on the idea of a fulcrum and lever. By balancing on the fulcrum, the lever acts to move and lift things very easily. This mechanism is the basis of many extremely clever inventions.

Once you have identified and understood the basic ideas of the simple machines and remember them, you will be ready to become an apprentice. But you must take a test with a puzzle game to earn your place in the laboratory. And then you’ll be able to build a machine!

Did you pass the test and earn your apprentice’s certificate? Now you can go ahead!

In the workshop you can choose to build a boat, a land vehicle or a flying machine.

You will be offered a choice of parts. You have to choose what you need. Make sure you get the right ones!

But you will get some useful hints – unless you want to make a monster! You can combine the parts in lots of different ways and build lots of different machines.

If you have chosen the right components, you will build one of Leonardo’s machines. And if you have done it properly, you will see it work!

Then you can put your plans onto a sheet of paper so that you can print a picture of your machine, with your own signature!

Or, if you prefer, you can combine all the parts any way you like, to create weird and wonderful machines. But they probably won’t work. Never mind! You can print those too.
